Our first Funkification rehearsal was great! Calli and I are so thrilled to be working with such talented performers. We have about 5 slots left to fill to make the group complete and we will be auditioning for those spots during rehearsals in September. Please send me an email if you would like information about auditions and the group as a whole. Also, we can add links to this blog for any business sponsors you may find. Please make me a list and we can update the blog right away with our community supporters’ info!!

Funkification
WHO: Students ages 12-18 who want to sing, dance and perform throughout the valley and at Disneyland in the spring. This is for those who can commit to rehearsals and performances for a full school year! The group will be directed by Karli Giles (music) and Calli Overstreet (dance). Some performing experience is preferred but not required.
WHAT: This will be a show-choir-style team for teenagers and we will perform songs and dances in many different styles and genres from broadway to hip-hop to western to jazz. Students should be prepared to be challenged and will have opportunities to audition for singing solos and special dance numbers. The group will consist of 20-30 performers and will rehearse regularly and perform at least once a month in and out of the community. We will put together a regular show about 30 minutes in length for all of our events. There will be costumes and t-shirts as well. No audition is necessary this year for students who have worked with us before, however students and parents will need to sign the one-year commitment contract to enroll!
WHEN: Rehearsals for this group will be every Friday evening from 4:30 pm – 6:30 pm beginning the first week of September through the end of May. There will also be a team meeting in September where a performance schedule will be given out for the year. The first payment will be due at the end of the month at the last practice and each monthly fee will be due following this pattern!
WHERE: The group will rehearse at a church building in Gilbert. It is called the New Life Family Church and the address is 202 S. Gilbert Rd. It is located on Gilbert between Elliot and Warner on the West side of the road. Our first meeting will also take place here.
WHY: This group will give students opportunities to perform outside of school and in the community. Being part of a performance team builds self-confidence and respect and also gives kids the chance to experience new things in rehearsals and on stage. They will travel to Disneyland and perform for a larger audience there as well as participate in a professional workshop with a Disney choreographer. Team members will also have lots of fun and make many new friends!
HOW: In order to sign up, students and parents must sign a commitment contract for the one school year (from September to May) and turn this in to the directors with the first month’s payment at the meeting in September. Because spots are limited, we recommend that you let the directors know ahead of time if you would like to reserve a spot and receive instructions for obtaining the contract:

WHAT ELSE: Funkification is trying to raise money to pay for costumes, performances and our trip to Disneyland! Any students who find sponsors can bring their info to the directors and we will create a link on our blog for their business websites and also give them a spot in our program at each of our shows! So be sure to tell all your friends and family members that they can receive extra advertising for their businesses just for helping out!
Karli’s Bio
I have been teaching musical theatre for over 13 years in Arizona and I have recently decided to leave the school atmosphere to create my own performing group and teach some private lessons. I love working with kids and have made so many great friends and connections over the years! I used to perform in the valley as a singer with a jazz band and I have been involved in many musical theatre plays and productions on and off the stage.
This last school year was one of my most successful working with Andrea and Erin McFeely on an original play, “Pirates, a Love Story”. Andrea is a brilliant writer and we had a lot of fun putting on this play at the charter school. I also directed a group that performed at the Phoenix Suns game, Gilbert Days parade, the 12K’s of Christmas benefit, and at Disneyland and they were a fantastic bunch of performers!
I look forward to these new adventures in the arts and hope to have more fun with my dear friends and amazing students as the years continue!
Karli and Andrea’s Workshops
We had fabulous success with our workshop this summer and we look forward to working with all of our wonderful students again soon. Andrea and I are working with the directors and department chair of music at the Mesa Community College Red Mountain Campus to start a new program offering musical theatre workshops for kids in the evenings at their campus. We hope to kick this program off in January 2011 and we will keep the blog updated with class times, pricing, age groups served, and material to be covered in the courses!
If you are interested in purchasing a DVD of the summer workshop from July, please send me an email and we can coordinate. Also, send me an email if you would like regular updates on classes we will be offering throughout the year!
